NMC and Australia Legion Scholarships

Background

AUSTRALIAN LEGION OF EX-SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN

The Australian Legion of Ex-Servicemen and Women (Australian Legion) grew from the merger of several small, local organisations formed during World War Two. These organisations offered assistance and support to Australian ex-servicemen and women. The Australian Legion was formed on 25 April 1944.

The Australian Legion enrolled virtually anyone who had been a member of the Australian military forces.

This all-encompassing classification for membership ensured that no one need be unsupported in the many problems faced by re-entry into civilian life.

It is now more sixty years since the end of World War Two and members of the Australian Legion are ageing. The Victorian State Council of the Australian Legion believes that the most effective way for members to benefit from the funds raised during the life of their organisation is to support activities that will support ex-servicemen and women in the Victorian community. One way of achieving this aim is through the provision of scholarships.

In 2006 the Australian Legion, through the Victorian Veterans Council, decided to make available scholarship funding to further the education of registered nurses in Victoria in the areas of aged care and palliative care nursing. The scholarships are to be administered on behalf of the Australian Legion by the Nurses Memorial Centre.

Nurses Memorial Centre Scholarships

Background
Nurses Memorial Centre Scholarships

The Nurses Memorial Centre (NMC) was established following World War Two as a "living memorial" to Australian nurses who lost their lives in war. While many people were involved in the formation of the Nurses Memorial Centre, two Victorian nurses: Betty Jeffrey OAM and Vivian Bullwinkel, are particularly well known for their life-long contributions to the NMC. Betty Jeffrey and Vivian Bullwinkel had been prisoners of war. They and their colleagues were determined that all Australian nurses who died during hostilities should not be forgotten. The NMC was established subsequently as a place where those nurses' lives could be celebrated through a range of professional nursing activities, including the provision of post-graduate education courses.

Today the NMC is a charitable not-for-profit organisation that maintains its activities primarily through investment income, donations and bequests. As a living memorial, the NMC has continued to support the nursing profession by offering scholarships to Victorian nurses and midwives who wish to undertake postgraduate studies in their field of practice. Emulating the convictions of the NMC's founders, applicants are required to demonstrate that their studies will benefit the health and well being of the Australian community.
